Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was encouraged to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. Aunt Denise worked during the night shift as nurse to ensure she could indulge her passion for theater and art throughout the day. DuVernay immediately was captivated after showing her that 1961 West Side Story film. DuVernay discovered through experience that art can be a powerful instrument for political activism. DuVernay was also taught by her mother, who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to show her creativity through art. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started producing in broadcast journalism when she was still in college. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was assigned to the watch and search the home for a specific juror. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to move into the world of public relations. DuVernay joined a small studio as a Junior Publicist shortly after graduating from college. In 1999, she launched her own business that specialized in public relations, The DuVernay Agency.
